About the Presentation

For many centuries, cloistered communities in the East and West have been the primary centres of contemplative living.  Fewer such communities exist today, yet many people with similar inclinations are functioning in the everyday world.  What is contemplation?  What does it meant to adopt a contemplative life?  And how is it possible to live in such a way within the contemporary world?

About the Presenter

Linda Oliveira was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is a second generation Theosophist.  In 1971 she joined the Theosophical Society after hearing some talks by the philosopher J. Krishnamurti, which had a profound effect on her future life.  She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Australian National University, majoring in psychology and political science.  During 1981 she was a student for several terms at the Krotona School of Theosophy, California, USA, and also worked for a time that year at the National Headquarters of the Theosophical Society in America.   She was first appointed as an Additional Member of the General Council of the Theosophical Society in 1996.  She held the office of National President of The Theosophical Society in Australia from 2002 until January 2009, and has occupied that office again from January 2012 until the present.  She is the Editor of Theosophy in Australia.  Elected as International Vice-President of the Theosophical Society from October 2008, she resided at the International Headquarters of the Society in Adyar, India for two and a half years until September 2011, prior to her return to Australia.  Linda has lectured for the TS in various countries and has had articles and interviews published in a number of TS magazines.  She is passionate about Theosophy because of its potential to thoroughly transform an individual when reflected upon deeply, and practised with heart and mind.
