John Algeo isProfessor Emeritus, English and Linguistics, University of Georgia.  When he was 17 he joined the Theosophical Society, eventually to hold office as president of the Theosophical Society in America from 1993-2002 and then Vice President of the International Theosophical Society in Adyar, India until 2008.  He is an author of many academic and theosophical books and articles and is an international speaker for the Society.  He received the Subba Row Medal for his significant contributions to Theosophical literature.

John’s studies were interrupted when he served in the U.S. army in 1951-54, but on his return he completed his degree gained his Masters and doctorate in linguistics.  John continued to have a distinguished academic career, whilst also serving as president of several professional groups such as The American Dialect Society, The American Name Society and the Dictionary Society of North America.  In the meantime, he also had a distinguished Theosophical career, and rose through the ranks of Co-Masonry gaining his 33rd degree in 2002.  Although he Co-Freemasonry and Theosophy had no formal connection, he believed they supported each other in that “Masonry is a practice in need of a theory and Theosophy is a theory in need of a practice.” John married his beloved wife Adele in 1958 and together they worked on all of John’s many projects in academia, for the Theosophical Society and in Co-Freemasonry.  They had two children.
